Matthias Paul, known professionally as Paul van Dyk, was born on December 16, 1971, in Eisenhüttenstadt, East Germany. He is one of the most influential trance DJs and producers in the history of electronic music. Rising to fame in the 1990s, he became the first artist to receive a Grammy nomination in the newly created Best Dance/Electronic Album category for Reflections (2003).
